Edmonton Oilers Vs Colorado Avalanche- Game 2 Pre-Game
After losing game 1, 8-6, the Edmonton Oilers look to bounce back in game 2 against the Colorado Avalanche tonight from Denver.
After losing in a high scoring game on Monday the Edmonton Oilers look to get the split on the road and tie the series at 1 game apiece. The Edmonton Oilers played a fairly loose defensive game in game 1, but were still able to put 6 into the Avalanche net. If they can tighten up defensively they should be able to get the win tonight.
I think the main problem for the Edmonton Oilers in game one was giving up quick goals against after they score a goal for. Compher scored 36 seconds after Kane, Makar scored 9 seconds after Hyman and Rantanen scored 1:39 seconds after that. These goals are instant momentum killers.
In NHL hockey momentum is such a big part of the game and the Oilers didn’t maintain any till the 3rd period. If the Edmonton Oilers don’t give up those instant bounce back goals, then the Oilers hold the momentum and can possible keep pressure towards the Avalanche.
Coming out of game one and going into game two the good news for the Edmonton Oilers is this is almost exactly how they started the Calgary Flames series. Game one in that series was a high scoring affair where the Edmonton Oilers were in the game despite playing a subpar game.
Need to play Edmonton Oilers hockey
In tonight’s game the Edmonton Oilers need to keep the offensive pressure the same, but need to cut down on the chances against. You aren’t going to win many games when you give up 47 shots against. If they can cut down that number they should have a solid chance to win.
The Oilers cannot get into a run and gun game against the Colorado Avalanche. This isn’t the LA Kings or Flames, the Avalanche will hurt you on the score board if they keep getting chances on the rush. Just look at what happened in game one.
The Edmonton Oilers should win a game when they score 6 goals, but if you play an open game and let the Avalanche come in on the rush and have high quality chances 6 isn’t going to be enough.
Injuries
Coming into this series most eyes were on Leon Draisaitl and how his “lower body” injury would impact his game. In game one it didn’t seem to have an impact on his game much. His high level of skill and will make his injury look like it doesn’t effect him. If he continues to get better that should only scare the Avalanche.
The injury that does have big impact on the player and this team is Darnell Nurse. We don’t know what type of injury he has, but it is having an affect on his game. He appears to be playing much more of a timid style of hockey.
The one thing that makes Nurse hard to play against is the fact that he is strong on the body and isn’t afraid to throw the body. With that element gone from his game he goes from being the team’s top defenseman to maybe the 3rd best. I would look at changing the pairings up to show this. He shouldn’t be playing top pair minutes in his condition.
