Edmonton Vs Calgary Flames- Game 5 Pre-Game
After winning on Tuesday the Edmonton Oilers have pushed the Calgary Flames to the brink of elimination. Tonight the Oilers look to punch their ticket to the Western Conference Final.
The Edmonton Oilers are in Calgary tonight hoping to advance to the Western Conference Finals for the first time since the 2006 Stanley Cup run. The Edmonton Oilers have won 3 games in a row to put the Flames to the edge of elimination. Not only have they won they have been the better team the majority of the time in this series.
The Edmonton Oilers are showing that they have the mental capacity to move on in these playoffs. The Flames were in a position last game where they needed to come out a have a good start, but the Edmonton Oilers jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead.
The Calgary Flames did battle back in the game thanks to a long distance goal against Mike Smith. The positive sign about this team is this Oilers team didn’t fold. They came out after that goal and owned play. No one would have criticized the Oilers if they did fold after that play, but they didn’t.
After seeing that I think the Edmonton Oilers aren’t going to come into this 5th game and take it easy on the Flames. They are going to want to embarrass them at home. The lesson they learned in the first round of not taking it easy will come through tonight.
No Answer For Kane/McDavid/Draisaitl
There has been 4 games so far in this series and the Calgary Flames can’t seem to stop the Edmonton Oilers first line. After the first game where Draisaitl, Kane and McDavid finish a combined -3, they have turned it around are currently a combined +17.
Evander Kane was held pointless in the first game. Since then he has 5 goals and 6 points in the next 3. McDavid has 11 points this series which is crazy, but Leon Draisaitl has 13 which is even more unheard of. The fact that Draisaitl is playing injured and still has 13 points in 4 games is a scary thought if he is able to get healthy moving forward in the playoffs.
If the Flames want a chance to get back in this series they need to limit this lines effectiveness. The fact that the first line has been walking all over the Flames is the reason that Edmonton is up 3-1 in this series.
Stay The Course
So far this series the Edmonton Oilers have been the better team. Asides from a couple of bad starts the Edmonton Oilers have played good hockey. In the last two games their starts have been good as well.
For the Oilers to win tonight they don’t need to change anything. More importantly they can’t let up on the Flames. Giving them life in this game would then in turn give them life in this series. You cannot give them any life in the series.
This is a Flames who was the best team in the division during the regular season and they have the ability to play better. I just think the way the Edmonton Oilers are playing the Flames can’t over power the Oilers in any aspect in this series.
Prediction
As long as the Edmonton Oilers play a solid game I see no reason why they can’t punch their ticket to the next round. The Flames have been out dueled in the last few games and that will continue tonight.
I am going to say the Edmonton Oilers win this game by a score of 6-3. I think it will be a very tight game throughout. Oilers will get the lead once again in this game, but it won’t come till later in the first period. The score will be close till the end of the 3rd till the Edmonton Oilers score at least one empty net goal.
