Tonight at Rogers Place the Edmonton Oilers will host the Dallas Stars.
This game really doesn’t have much of an effect on where the Edmonton Oilers will finish in the standings as I am fairly sure they have cemented the spot of second in Pacific. In order for them to get passed, they would have to fall completely apart.
The Oilers are currently 2 points ahead of the Los Angeles Kings with two games in hand and 7 points ahead of the Vegas Golden Knights with one game in hand. It looks like this may be the first time in the existence of their franchise that Vegas will miss the playoffs.
In order to do that the Edmonton Oilers must first lock in their spot as a playoff team. They can help that out tonight if they are able to beat the Dallas Stars. The Stars themselves are looking to hold on to a playoff spot as well.
Currently the Stars hold the second wildcard spot and sit 4 points ahead of Vegas with a game in hand. Although it looks like they are in a good spot they haven’t been playing well as of late. They are currently 5-3-2 in their last 10 games. The Oilers are 8-1-1 in their last 10.
Clearly coming into this game the Edmonton Oilers are the hotter of the two teams. I would like to see this continue as the season winds down and we get into the playoffs. If the Oilers can get to the playoffs riding a hot streak that would be ideal.
So far this season in the two games played the Stars have won both games. 4-1 on November 23 and 5-3 on March 22. Both of those games were in Dallas thought, this will be the first match at Rogers Place.
I expect this game to have a playoff vibe to it as both teams really want the 2 points up for grabs. That in combo with both hoping to get in a groove going into playoffs should create a tight checking game.
In do still expect the Oilers to win as they are playing really go right now. That is in big part to Mike Smith who has back to back shutouts heading into tonight. Can he make it 3? We’ll have to wait and see.
