The Edmonton Oilers tough season ending stretch continues tonight as they take on the Minnesota Wild in Minnesota. The Wild are in a similar position to the Oilers in their division playoff race. The Wild and Oilers currently sit in 2nd place and in their divisions and are 7 and 6 points ahead of the 4th place teams respectively.

Both teams are also quite a bit back from the teams that hold down the first place spot. This game for each team is about maintaining that gap from the teams trying to take them out of a playoff spot, so a win is very important for both of these teams.

This game is another good test for the Edmonton Oilers as they get ready for a playoff run.

If the Edmonton Oilers can produce another game like the one they played on Saturday against the Colorado Avalanche it will prove to me this team is peaking at the right time. Although they lost the game against Colorado, they played what could have been their best game of the year.

If they continue to play like this the rest of the way I will have high hopes for the playoffs. If the Oilers play the LA Kings in the first round they should beat them, especially with the injury to Drew Doughty. If Vegas passes the Kings they are a more difficult opponent in my eyes, plus they will be getting players back from injury.

The difference in skill from the Wild point of view isn’t as big of a difference as long as they don’t become a wild card team. Playing against St. Louis, Nashville or Dallas those teams are around the same skill level. If they fall into the wild card and have to face Calgary or Colorado I don’t like their chances.

Overall there is a lot riding on these two points up for grabs. I wouldn’t be surprised that if the game is tied late in the 3rd period that these teams play a very safe game, cause getting one point guaranteed is a lot better than zero.
