Can Connor McDavid Make It To 50 Goals This Season?
The Edmonton Oilers are heating up with winning 5 in a row and Connor McDavid is a main part of that heat. Currently McDavid is sitting a 41 goals on the season through 70 games played. His teammate Leon Draisaitl currently has 50 over the same amount of games played. With 11 games remaining can Connor McDavid get to the 50 goal mark?
50 Goal History
Since the 2000-2001 season, not including the current season, there has been 27 players to get 50 goals in one season. Alex Ovechkin(8 times), Corey Perry(1), Dany Heatly(2) Evgeni Malkin(1), Ilya Kovalchuk(2), Jarome Iginla(2), Jaromir Jagr(2), Joe Sakic(1), Jonathan Cheechoo(1), Leon Draisaitl(1), Milan Hejduk(1), Pavel Bure(1), Sidney Crosby (1), Steven Stamkos(2), and Vincent Lecavalier(1) have all done it.
In the last 20 years there has not been two teammates to get 50 goals. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl could be the first to do it this millennium. Leon already has his 50, we just need McDavid to get 9 goals in his last 11 games.
Scoring Rate
So far this season Connor McDavid has his 41 goals over a 70 game span, that is a 0.59 goals per game rate. If he scores at the rate he has averaged the whole season he will end up with 46 goals this season. This would be upsetting for Edmonton Oilers fans because he would be 4 goals short.
The good news for Oilers fans is that as of late he is scoring at a much higher rate than that. In his last 10 games he has averaged 0.7 goals/game. That still would only put him at 48 goals on the season. The stats show that he is playing better than that right now though.
In his last 5 games he has averaged 1.2 goals/game. This is the number that we want to see. If he can continue at this rate Connor McDavid will end up with 54 goals on the season. I find it very unlikely that he will average more than a goal a game for the rest of the season though.

Can Connor McDavid Actually Get 50?
In order to get 50 goals Connor McDavid would need to average 0.82 goals/game that would put him at exactly 50 goals. Is this something McDavid can do? Of course it is, I’ve learned that if it is humanly possible the human that can do it Connor McDavid.
Over his career McDavid has averaged almost 0.5 goals/game. So bumping that number up by 0.4 is something he should be able to do. The fact that he would only need to keep that rate going for 11 games is what makes it more likely to happen.
