The Edmonton Oilers will be back at home tonight in a game against the San Jose Sharks. For the Oilers, they will be looking to snap a two-game skid, while the Sharks are hoping to find their third straight victory.

It will be the second matchup between these two divisional opponents this season. The Oilers took the first contest back on Feb. 14 in a 3-0 win. That game saw goaltender Stuart Skinner pick up his first ever NHL shutout, only to be sent back to the American Hockey League a short time later.

As for the goaltending matchup tonight, Mike Smith is expected to get the start for the Oilers. In 17 games this season, the 39-year-old has a 3.37 goals against average (GAA) along with a .896 save percentage (SV%) and a 6-8-2 record. At the other end it will be Kappo Kahkonen, who will be making his first start as a Shark after being acquired from the Minnesota Wild at the trade deadline. Prior to being dealt, he compiled a 2.87 GAA along with a .910 SV% and a 12-8-3 record.

Edmonton Oilers Playoff Run

This game will be a massive one for the Oilers, as a win will pull them within one point of the L.A. Kings for second in the Pacific Division. It is of much less importance for the Sharks as they sit nine points shy of a wild card spot, though they do have the opportunity to play a spoiler role, not only for tonight, but the remainder of the season.

While there haven’t been a ton of bright spots for the Sharks this season, one player who has impressed is Timo Meier. The 25-year-old leads his team with 27 goals and 60 points in just 58 games, and will be a player the Oilers need to keep an eye on each time he hits the ice tonight. At the other end, Connor McDavid will look to extend his current seven-game point streak, and widen the gap in the league scoring race. His 93 points lead all skaters, but his teammate in Leon Draisaitl (88) as well as Florida Panthers forward Jonathan Huberdeau (86) aren’t far behind.
