Today is the NHL trade deadline, this means it is the last day for NHL teams to swap players and assets before the end of the season. The Edmonton Oilers are a team that are right in the thick of the playoff race.

The question surrounding this Edmonton Oilers team this trade deadline day is are they going to make moves, or are they going to keep their powder dry? Personally I think the Edmonton Oilers shouldn’t go quite all in, but they should also just watch trades happen around them.

Could the Edmonton Oilers add a dman?

I think the Oilers should be looking at a stronger, tough defenseman. Earlier this week I recommended the Oilers maybe looking at Carson Soucy. There have also been some rumors rolling around now that the Oilers may be interested in Zdeno Chara.

The addition of a defenseman would be one of the ways to improve the season long issue of goaltending without actually adding a goalie. If you give up less quality chances against, your team is obviously going to give up less goals. Since the price for a goalie may to large to trade for right now, upgrading the back end may be the best option for the Edmonton Oilers.

Could the Edmonton Oilers bring in a skilled forward?

The Edmonton Oilers may have done their trade deadline offensive upgrade by signing Evander Kane. I personally hope that the Oilers are still hunting to add a forward. I recently wrote that perhaps they would take a run at a player like Phil Kessel.

Not being sure where Ken Holland’s head is at is the problem. Does he think this team will be satisfied with winning one playoff round or does he think this team can go further than that? I don’t think this team will be able to beat the Calgary Flames.

The Flames have already brought in help via trade. They have already traded for Tyler Toffoli and Calle Jarnkrok. This improves not only their forward depth with Jarnkrok, but it also makes their top end better with Toffoli.

If the Edmonton Oilers want to make it out of the Pacific Division they are going to need to get better. I do not know what Holland wants to do or what he can do. Cause as much as I would like to see some big trades, I don’t want to sell the farm on this team.
