The Edmonton Oilers look to push their winning streak to 3 tonight against the Detroit Red Wings. With the Eastern Conference playoff teams pretty much already in place, the Red Wings will not be a playoff team once again this year.

The Western Conference is the exact opposite of the East, with up to 8 teams battling for the last few spots. I would say that only the Calgary Flames and Colorado Avalanche are locked in a playoff spot. This is why the Oilers need to win the games this week.

With the Red Wings being that low in the standings this is a game the Edmonton Oilers should win. With the tight race right now these are 2 points the Oilers need to get if they want to prove they belong in the playoffs.

Comparing the two teams you can clearly see that the Edmonton Oilers are the better team in every category. This is a game team that the Oilers should dominate in every asset. I think this could be a game where the Oilers offence takes control of a game.

In recent weeks the Oilers’ powerplay has been unable to score at the rate it should be. With the Red Wings penalty kill being around 73%, they are the second worst team on the penalty kill. Hopefully facing a weak PK the Oilers powerplay can get rolling.

The same could be said about the Oilers penalty kill and the Red Wings powerplay. Detroit’s powerplay is in the bottom 10 in the league. If the Oilers take a lot of penalties this could be a game where the penalty kill can find a groove.

Both the powerplay and penalty kill have a lot to do with confidence. If the team goes out at the start of the penalty or powerplay with the mind set of killing off the penalty or scoring a powerplay goal it takes away the thought of doubt. If they take away the mental struggle of these units, there is no question the Oilers have the skill to succeed.

Coming off a couple of big wins the Edmonton Oilers have a lot of momentum behind them. I believe they are going to come out fast tonight and score a quick goal and never look back. The Red Wings don’t have the skill to play a run and gun game against the Oilers. Once the Oilers get the lead the Wings will have to try and tie it up, but it will only make things worse.

I also think the Oilers will find success on the powerplay tonight. Scoring more than one goal while a man up. They also won’t allow a powerplay goal against. Tonight will be a big step in getting the Oilers special teams up and running again.

It will be an exciting game to watch if you are an Edmonton Oilers fan, but if you are Detroit fan, it will be a long night for you.
