The Edmonton Oilers head to Calgary to take on the Flames in the third battle of Alberta this season. These two teams are coming off games that have the opposite feeling to them.
The Calgary Flames are coming off a win against arguably the best team in the Western Conference, while the Oilers are coming off a loss from the basement dwelling Montreal Canadiens.
The problem for the Oilers last game was the fact the they couldn’t get a save when they needed it. Mike Smith has really been struggling this season. He will be missing this game due to an illness, so the team has called up Skinner.
Though they called up Skinner, Koskinen will be getting the start tonight. In his last few starts Koskinen has played solid, which is what the Oilers need. They need a goalie who can sit around a save percentage of 0.910. If they get that they would win more games.
Another issue with the Edmonton Oilers game lately has been there special teams. At the start of the season both the powerplay and penalty kill were near the top of the league. Unfortunately now they seem to give up powerplay goal against each game.
For the powerplay, they seem to be going to the perfect tap in goal. I think they need to simplify it. The last couple goals they have scored on the powerplay have come off a scramble, they need to create chaos in order to get a powerplay goal right now.
The Calgary Flames right now belong in the conversation for one of the best teams in the league. Every line is playing well and they have one of the best goalies in the league. Markstrom has the most shutouts this season.
In order to win this game the Oilers are going to have to be solid defensively. This is because Markstrom rarely lets in many goals. He has a goal against average of 2.17. That means if he has an average game, to win the game the Oilers will need to only let in one goal.
I think it is possible, but the team will have to play a whole 60 minutes and be solid on the special teams. This is a game I would love to see the Oilers win. It would show that they have the ability to compete with the top teams, just like they did last week on their road trip.
