First Round Draft Pick

With the Edmonton Oilers hopefully finishing in the top part of the league, this pick will not be a high pick in the first round. This is the asset I think the Edmonton Oilers are most likely to use. It is rare to see just a first round pick go by itself, so it will likely be part of a package.

For this package I can see them either adding a prospect to bring in a big difference maker. Another option would be putting in player that has some cap hit to clear up cap space, someone like a Zack Kassian or a Mikko Koskinen.

Whichever way Ken Holland uses this asset it needs to end up helping this team go on a deeper in the playoffs. They can’t afford to lose anymore trades if they want their team to get better. A first round pick usually ends up being a player that will contribute to your NHL roster.

Since 2013 the Oilers first round picks have all played for their roster. Every pick from then till 2017 is a major part of their current roster, Darnell Nurse(2013, 7th overall), Leon Draisaitl(2014, 3rd overall), Connor McDavid(2015,1st overall), Jesse Puljujarvi(2016, 4th overall) and Kailer Yamamoto(2016, 22 overall). This list is all of Edmonton’s top skaters, so if you trade away a first it needs to be a top player.
