The Edmonton Oilers have been leaning on Mikko Koskinen the first few games of the season, and it has been working for the team.
The Edmonton Oilers are lucky to have Mikko Koskinen on their team as the Oilers goaltender has been hot this season for the team ever since Mike Smith fell to an injury early on into the season.
During his last five games, Koskinen has won four of the five games making over 30 saves twice during that time. The Oilers net minder has a save percentage of .912 so far this season and he has a goals against average of 2.89, his second best season statistically only the 2019-20 season is better.
Koskinen has been great at stopping pucks in the slot, and he is using his big body to do whatever he can to keep the puck out of the the net. The Oilers are obviously an offensive team led by Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, but it is nice to see the goaltending lead the charge, especially against a division rival like the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday.
Edmonton is 15-5-0 through the first 20 games of the season. The team is the top team within the Pacific Division and is fifth in the league right now in points. The Oilers are already at 30 points on the season, a feat that is definitely not taken lightly compared to how other teams have started and how the team is doing with injuries.
Losing Mike Smith to an injury early is not good to see for the team, but Koskinen and young net minder Stuart Skinner have been up to the task so far. I cannot wait to see what this team does when they are back to 100 percent.
