Before the start of the Edmonton Oilers, New York Rangers game the Oilers will be retiring Kevin Lowe’s number 4. Kevin Lowe played 1468 career games (1254 regular season, 214 playoffs). He won the Stanley Cup 6 times in his career.
Lowe was a major part of the 80’s Edmonton Oilers dynasty. He played a total of 15 years with the Oilers. He was the Edmonton Oilers’ first-ever franchise draft pick when he was drafted with the Oilers 1st round pick, 21st overall in 1979. He was drafted ahead of two other Oiler greats and Hall of Famers, Mark Messier, and Glenn Anderson.
There are only 9 players in the history of the NHL to have hoisted the cup more times than Lowe. He is tied with 15 players with the 6. These include two of his Oiler and Ranger teammates, Messier and Anderson. So it only makes sense that his name is the next name to go up to the rafters.
He went on from there to play 1209 games with the Edmonton Oilers. Scoring 83 goals and 352 assists playing with the Oil. A seven time NHL All-Star, Lowe, also was able to lift the Stanley Cup 5 times as a member of the Oilers.
Although his scoring stats aren’t anything overly spectacular. The fact that his plus/minus over his regular season career is where it is (+260) goes to show you that he was a crucial part to his team’s success.
On June 24, 2020 Lowe finally got the call to Hall of Fame along with current Oiler GM Ken Holland. More than 10 years after his final game in the NHL Lowe got the much deserved honor of being inducted.
I hope that Kevin Lowe enjoys the ceremony and that the Edmonton Oilers do a good job with the presentation. There is no doubt that the fans will be there and cheer for him. After the ceremony, I hope that the Oilers can get a win in his honor.
