The Edmonton Oilers’ history has been filled with some pretty big trades with a ton of different teams.

The Edmonton Oilers have made a number of trades over the years throughout their long history in the NHL. Today I want to highlight their deals with every other team in the league.

Some of these trades might be bigger than others, throughout the course of the Edmonton Oilers’ years as a franchise they have made big and small trades alike, and you might be shocked to see how long it has been for some clubs to make any moves.

Edmonton is a team that has done a lot of winning during their time in the NHL. They have a number of Stanley Cups and have been involved in some pretty big blockbuster trades, but can you name the last trade they made with a team like the Winnipeg Jets?

We are going to look at every team in this article, and we are going in order of when the last trade occurred, so obviously a deal with the Devils is first up on this list.

New Jersey Devils

April 12th, 2021

The first trade on this list was the only move Ken Holland and the Oilers made this past season at the deadline. For a team with Connor McDavid, you would think they would buy in more at the deadline for a playoff run.

Dmitry Kulikov played in three games in the postseason and was a minus-three in the plus/minus department. Not much was going on for him and the Oilers throughout the entire postseason. The fourth-round pick the Oilers traded for Kulikov was going to become a third if the team won a playoff series, but that did not happen.

San Jose Sharks

October 7th, 2020

The Edmonton Oilers’ trade with the San Jose Sharks was an example of the Sharks trying to trade up in the draft while Edmonton took advantage of an opportunity to snag another pick.

The Edmonton Oilers traded their 2020 3rd round pick, the 76th overall pick in the draft to San Jose. San Jose drafted Daniil Guschchin while Edmonton grabbed Carter Savoie and Tyler Tullio. Considering none of these players have been in the league yet because they were drafted just a year ago. We will have to wait more time to see what this trade was worth.

Anaheim Ducks

February 24, 2020

The Anaheim Ducks traded Angus Redmond and a conditional seventh-round pick to the Oilers for Joel Persson. The conditions of the pick were that Joel Persson had to play at least 25 games during the 2020-21 season. The conditions were not met and Anaheim kept the pick.

After this trade occurred neither Redmond nor Persson played in the league. So this is another swap that does not really matter.

Ottawa Senators

February 24, 2020

This was a pretty good trade for the Oilers. They sent a 2021 fifth-round pick to the Ottawa Senators for Tyler Ennis who was a nice depth addition for the playoffs in 2020. Well, it did not end up working out for the team, but overall good trade for an okay player. Now it will be interesting to see whether or not the Oiler re-sign him.

Detroit Red Wings

February 24, 2020

The same day as the Ottawa Senators trade, the team also made a deal with the Red Wings. This is an example of a bad trade overall. Athanasiou did not stay in Edmonton after the 2020 season ended and is now with the Los Angeles Kings where he put up 23 points in 47 games.

Detroit also made another trade on that same day trading for Mike Green. However, CapFriendly lists the Andrea Athanasiou trade as the newer one so I am running with that as the latest trade between the two clubs.

Pittsburgh Penguins

July 26, 2019

Now we officially enter 2019. The Oilers sent prospect John Marino to Pittsburgh. It was the signing rights that Pittsburgh wanted and they eventually signed him to a contract so Edmonton acquired a sixth-round pick from the team.

Marino played in 56 games in 2019-20 with Pittsburgh and he played in an additional 52 games in 2020-21. For a defenseman who now is an NHL regular, maybe Edmonton should have tried to get more out of the Penguins.

Calgary Flames

July 19, 2019

This is arguably the worst trade on this list. Sending Milan Lucic to Calgary for James Neal. Neither has been great and both are drastically overpaid players.

So here are the conditions from this trade: The 2020 3rd round pick is transferred to the Flames if James Neal scores 21 or more goals and Milan Lucic scores 10 or fewer goals than Neal did. The pick was transferred.

Vancouver Canucks

February 16, 2019

The Edmonton Oilers had a pretty good swap here. Sam Gagner was a more developed defenseman who was capable of playing and more and spent more time with the Oilers. While Ryan Spooner only played in 11 games this season with Vancouver and only had two goals with Edmonton through 25 games in 2019.

Philadelphia Flyers

February 16, 2019

This is another bad trade for the Oilers. Anthony Stolarz was a young goalie with less experience when Edmonton traded for him from Philadelphia. Cam Talbot had more experience and was not at his best when he was with the team, but has since been great in Minnesota and helped get them to a game seven against the Vegas Golden Knights.

Chicago Blackhawks

December 30, 2018

Not only did the Blackhawks drop a bad contract on the Oilers in Brandon Manning, but the team got Drake Caggiula was a fine addition to the team in Chicago.

This is an example of Edmonton trading away one of their better depth forwards that they are now missing. Caggiula was a great player in Edmonton and the team just did not know his value until he was off the team.

Florida Panthers

December 30, 2018

Overall December 30th was not a good day for the Edmonton Oilers in 2018. Not only did they trade away Drake Caggiula, but they added defenseman Alex Petrovic for a 3rd round pick and Chris Wideman. Petrovic played in nine games with Edmonton and never made an impact.

New York Rangers

November 16, 2018

Ryan Spooner for Ryan Strome. Ryan Strome is still with New York while Ryan Spooner is no longer a part of the Edmonton Oilers. This is a pretty even trade on paper, but it was better for New York in the long run.

St. Louis Blues

October 1, 2018

A rare October trade. Right before the 2018 season began the team traded Jaucub Jerabek to the St. Louis Blues for a conditional 6th round pick. If Jerabek played in 50 or more games the pick was going to become a 5th round pick. However, the conditions were not met so Edmonton drafted in the 6th round.

Montreal Canadiens

June 23, 2018

There are a few instances of Edmonton trading up in the draft on this list. While sometimes it works out better than others, this is an instance where it ended up not mattering as the team traded their 3rd and 5th round picks for Montreal’s 2nd-round pick.

Toronto Maple Leafs

June 8, 2018

The conditions of this pick were not met, so Edmonton did not get the 2020 7th round pick. So basically Edmonton trade Nolan Vesey for “Future Considerations”

Nashville Predators

February 25, 2018

The Oilers cleared a little cap space with this move as Mark Letestu had a 1.8 million dollar cap hit while Pontus Aberg was only at $650,000. This is another trade right around the deadline.

New York Islanders

February 24, 2018

Brandon Davidson was traded to the New York Islanders after playing in 23 games with Edmonton during the 2017-18 season. With the Oilers, he put up three goals and an assist. Not a bad acquisition by the Oilers on this trade.

Tampa Bay Lightning

January 31, 2018

I love trades that involve future considerations. It is basically a step up from saying they are getting this player for free. Edward Pasquale played in three games with the Tampa Bay Lightning during the 2018-19 season posting a 3.96 goals-against average and a save percentage of .882

Los Angeles Kings

November 14, 2017

A November swap for the Edmonton Oilers saw the team trade Jussi Jokinen to the Los Angeles Kings in order to add Mike Cammalleri. While a lot of teams usually refrain from making trades early on in the season, Edmonton has a handful of trades in November and December.

Arizona Coyotes

June 24, 2017

The Edmonton Oilers wanted to move up four spots in the draft, so they traded the 82nd overall pick along with a 5th round pick to the Arizona Coyotes in order to draft Stuart Skinner 78th overall.

Boston Bruins

April 24, 2015

Arguably the worst trade on the entire list. When the Oilers named Peter Chiarelli their general manager in April of 2015, they were bringing in a general manager who still had three years under contract in Boston at the time.

The Bruins had fired him a little while earlier and while he was fired he was still under contract with the team. Edmonton had to give up a second-round pick in order to add Chiarelli as GM.

Columbus Blue Jackets

June 25, 2014

Columbus is a team I find a little shocking is this far down on the list. I would have thought that the two teams would have been involved in some kind of trade earlier. The fifth-round pick was used to draft Tyler Bird 137th overall.

Minnesota Wild

March 4, 2014

The great Ilya Bryzgalov was traded to the Minnesota Wild for a 2014 4th round pick around the trade deadline in 2014. The draft pick that Edmonton got in the deal was used to draft William Lagesson with the 91st overall pick.

Buffalo Sabres

December 19, 2013

The Oilers traded the signing rights for Linus Omark to the Sabres for a 2014 conditional 6th round draft pick. The conditions of the 6th round pick were not met so Linus Omark was traded to Buffalo for basically nothing.

Dallas Stars

July 5, 2013

Sending Shawn Horcoff to the Dallas Stars for Philip Larsen and a 2016 5th round pick was an interesting move back in 2013. I find it interesting watching teams trade around 7th round picks. Honestly very few players make it to the NHL that are drafted in the 7th round so seeing teams swap 7th rounders years in advance is kind of funny.

Washington Capitals

April 2, 2013

The last trade between the Oilers and the 2018 Stanley Cup Champions came all the way back in 2013 when Edmonton sent Dane Byers to Washington for Garrett Stafford in return.

Colorado Avalanche

February 28, 2011

I am shocked there have not been more trades between the Oilers and Avalanche. Colorado is such a good team, but a few short seasons ago they were one of the worst in the league. Everyone has been watching as we have seen both sides of the Oilers, both good and bad. I am shocked there was not even one trade between the two franchises.

Carolina Hurricanes

June 26, 2010

Not much really needs to be said about the trade this far down on the list. Riley Nash was sent to the Hurricanes for a 2nd round pick ahead of the draft. Edmonton drafted Martin Marincin with the second-round pick.

Seattle Kraken (Photo by Jim Bennett/Getty Images)
Seattle Kraken (Photo by Jim Bennett/Getty Images) /

Winnipeg Jets

June 24, 2006

The then Atlanta Thrashers traded their 2006 3rd round pick (75th overall) to the Edmonton Oilers for a 2006 3rd and 7th (80th overall and 200th overall)

June 12, 1991

Edmonton traded John LeBlanc and a 1992 tenth-round pick for a 1991 fifth-round pick.

It is amazing to think how far back we have to go to find a trade between the Winnipeg Jets and the Edmonton Oilers. The 2006 trade was for the Atlanta Thrashers who would later become the Winnipeg Jets, and the 1991 trade is for the Winnipeg Jets before they moved to Arizona.

Vegas Golden Knights & Seattle Kraken

The Oilers have not made any trades with the two new franchises just yet. Vegas is a team that Edmonton could consider making a deal with in the next few seasons as the salary cap takes control of their roster a little more, while Seattle would be a good idea to trade with during the expansion draft to make sure that the players they want to be taken are grabbed.
