The Edmonton Oilers needed a much-needed spark when it mattered most. With all eyes on the potential impact that right winger Jesse Puljujarvi would have on the top line after being promoted, the Oilers had to win this game at all costs. Coming off a tough loss on Friday at the hands of the Toronto Maple Leafs, this was a must-win game to help right the ship.

Just when the Oilers needed it most, boy, did the alternate captain step up or what? With literally a fraction of a second remaining before heading into overtime, forward Leon Draisaitl dropped this gem of a goal to beat the buzzer…

It sure is a thing of beauty, eh? These are the plays that can help boost the confidence of a team beyond measure. These are the plays that can build momentum towards continued success. Most importantly of all, these are the plays that can help silence the naysayers.

The Edmonton Oilers are wise to take the season one game at a time

More from Oil On Whyte

It’s no secret that after Friday’s loss, many fans of the Oilers started to be disgruntled over the “same old nonsense” that they’ve seen over the past few years by the team.

The truth of the matter is, head coach Dave Tippett knows that in order for the Oilers to be competitive all season long, it’s imperative to take things one game at a time.

In a short, 56-game regular season, this is the best mantra to have when it comes to the Oilers. Don’t worry about the past, don’t look into the future, just focus on the here and now. As it stands, the Oilers beat the Jets 4-3 and are now 3-4-0 heading into a much-deserved day off.

The Oilers looked as if they were playing with a higher sense of urgency against the Jets. Not only did they move well on the ice, but they also seemed motivated to do whatever it took to get the job done. One has to admire their tenacity to play fast, play hard, and never give up no matter what as this game almost went into overtime.

Overall, this is a great way to start the new week as the Oilers were impressive in their win over the Jets. Now, it’s all about looking at all the positives from this victory and continuing to move forward. The Oilers take on the Jets once again in the MTS Centre on Tuesday as it’s all about taking this season one game at a time.
