The NHL Off-Season is in full swing as the Edmonton Oilers have unveiled their schedule for the 2019/2020 season.

Wednesday October 2nd is a day that every Oiler fan should mark immediately on their calendar, as the Edmonton Oilers will host the Vancouver Canucks in the first regular season game of the season.  The 2019/2020 Schedule has been released!

Looking at the schedule we can glean a few details and try and make some hypothesis based on how tough or easy that we believe the schedule to be.  Here are a few thoughts.

  • The Oilers are one of 8 teams that play on opening night and one of 4 Canadian teams.  On that night the Senators play the Leafs, the Capitals play the Blues, and the Sharks play the Vegas Golden Knights.
  • After a two game home-stand, the Oilers immediately hit the road on a four game road trip.  In fact most of October the team is on the road, playing only 6 home games in the first 30 days of the season.
  • The team doesn’t play their first four game homestand until the first week of December.
  • The first battle of Alberta is December 27th.
  • Edmonton is off for 10 days between January 19th and 28th due to the mandated league 5 day break, combined with the time for the All Star Game.
  • Edmonton plays in 6 different back to back scenarios throughout this season, including a home and away versus the Vancouver Canucks.
  • March is busy month in Edmonton as the team will enjoy a four game homestand. followed by a three game round trip, and then another 6 games at home.  The Oilers play a whopping 16 games in March.
  • The Oilers last regular season game (but hopefully not the last Oilers game we watch that season) and only game in April is April 4th; a road game against the Calgary Flames.

A few other important games that might be of note to Oilers fans.

  • The Oilers will square off against their previous coach Todd McLellan in the second game of the season on October 5th versus the LA Kings.
  • Speaking of old Oilers coaches, on November 10th, the team will face a blast from the past in Dallas Eakins Anaheim Ducks.
  • Edmonton will have their first look at 2019 First Overall Draft Selection Jack Hughes in New Jersey on October 10th.  Immediately after, on the same road trip the Oilers will also likely see the Second Overall pick Kaapo Kakko the following game against the Rangers on October 12th.
  • Edmonton will get their first taste of the Stanley Cup Champions, the St Louis Blues November 6th.
  • Dave Tippett will play his first game behind the bench against his old team, the Arizona Coyotes on November 24th.
  • Fans are always excited to watch Oilers/Leafs games and they will get their first chance on January 6th.

Which game or games are you most excited for this season?
