Edmonton Oilers: Four overreactions to the game 1 loss
By Carson Trask
Edmonton Oilers – Peter Chiarelli and Todd McLellan
General Manager and head coach are often tied at the hip. When one goes the other often follows. Peter Chiarelli has made a career off of bad signings and trades. His claim to fame is the 2011 Stanley Cup Boston Bruins, in which most of the key pieces were there before he arrived.

The signings of Milan Lucic, Kris Russell, Drake Caggiula and Miko Koskinen, an unproven commodity to a one-way deal all look bad. Not to mention drastically overpaying Leon Draisaitl. These roster moves have handcuffed his head coach. A coach can only do so much with the roster he is given. This roster is getting to a point where it looks maxed out. there are only so many buttons for Todd Mclellan to push.
Both GM and coach appear to be on the hot seat, with Chiarelli likely being the first to go. The pressure to win this season will only amplify as the season goes on, and if the losses start piling up.
The rumours of Mclellan being the future Seattle head coach will only gain traction if the Oilers don’t have a good season. These are interesting times indeed.
Final Thoughts
The Edmonton Oilers have played one game this season. It was a very disappointing game, but one game nonetheless. This team has flaws, but so does all the other 30 teams in the league. That’s what makes the NHL more interesting than other sports. The parody.
The Oilers have a chance to win, and that is all matters. There a variety of different variables that need to turn up on the positive side in order for that to happen, but it is still a chance. Talbot needs to be the player the team expects him to be, the defence needs to be much tougher to play against and Chiarelli needs to make a smart trade for once to take this team to another level.
The Oilers have the best player in the NHL, a true generational talent. Mcdavid makes everyone around him better, which makes the team better. While things look glum right now, this team has some promising pieces. Some ready now, some not. Either way, sit back and enjoy the ride.
