The Edmonton Oilers announced yesterday that they had signed Jakub Jerabek to a one-year minimum deal. Could he make an impact next year?

With the news that broke out last week that the Edmonton Oilers lost one of their defenceman to a season injury was devastating. It seemed like the team, and the organization was trending in the right direction in the offseason so far.

With the additions of an upgraded coaching staff, solid draft prospects and critical depth signings it looked like the Oilers were primed to get training camp rolling next month. The team needed to get everything to give the fans and their critics a strong showing to kick off the season strong.

With the injury that Andrej Sekera suffered in his offseason workout, it was announced he would be out after rupturing his Achilles tendon. That type of timetable for that injury is usually around a year for a full recovery. Peter Chiarelli needed to act fast to try to sign a replacement very quickly, and he did one week later.

The Signing

That player he got is fresh from winning a Stanley Cup, and his name is Jakub Jerabek. His signing was presented as a depth spot for the roster. Oilers gave him a one-year deal which was the only thing that made logical stance from an economic and roster standpoint.

There is not much to say about the new signee since he only joined the league less than a year ago. He was signed an entry-level contract with the Montreal Canadiens in May 2017 but was called up at around November and played only 25 games.

He didn’t contribute much and was traded for a 2019 5th Round Draft pick to the Washington Capitals. He just started two games in their championship run in the first round against the Columbus Blue Jackets and was a healthy scratch the rest of the way.

So this will be in a sense his first shot to impress an NHL franchise and try to get a defined role on the team before the season starts. Remember that he was assigned to an AHL affiliate after signing with Montreal, so we’ll see how he fares in training camp.
