The Edmonton Oilers are not expected to make a huge splash in free agency, but they will address some holes.

As per TSN’s Ryan Rishaug, Edmonton is planning to address their needs for right wing and defensive depth by investing in AHL/NHL free agents. This explains the earlier report of Edmonton looking into signing pending UFA Ty Rattie.

When it comes to available NHLers on the market, players like Jaromir Jagr and Justin Williams are available, but they do come with a bit more of a price tag. If the Oilers invest in AHL wingers, they can add depth to their roster while spending less money.

The Oilers could have re-signed Tyler Pitlick, however, he’s likely to move on from Edmonton. He’s struggled with adversity and injuries but has shown upside and ability. The Oilers have given him many chances and likely don’t want to hold onto him because of his recurring injuries.

Another free agent they could be interested in is Dylan Blujus; the 6-foot-3, 203-pound blueliner is an AHL right-hand shot. He plays with a lot of physicality and a stay-at-home style; Blujus plays a simple game and is reliable on defence, and can strengthen Edmonton’s depth on the blueline. Plus, at 24, he has upside and can only get better from here.

There is some concern that Edmonton could be missing out on proven players; however, they are just giving their players already in the systtem a chance to shwo their worths. That in itself should pay off, as people like Matthew Benning can have confidence in their game and a chance to improve their edge.

Edmonton still needs to address some of their qualified RFAs, and they will likely make that a priority. However, the process should be easier if they are seeking out AHL/NHL free agents to fill the void on their roster.
