The Edmonton Oilers have started contract talks with Kris Russell, according to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun.

While a new deal was only “briefly” discussed, it was simply to “get the ball rolling” as they work toward a new deal prior to July 1.

The Oilers signed Russell to a one-year, $3.1 million deal late in the 2016 offseason. He was originally signed to ensure more depth on the blue line, and became a versatile member of the lineup. As a top-four defender, Russell not only played both the right and left side, but served as a huge asset to the team. He was an effective skater who also led the NHL in shot blocks and helped Edmonton’s blue line grow.

This past season, the 30-year-old scored one goal and 13 points over 68 games. He also had four assists in 13 postseason games this year.

While his possession metrics aren’t outstanding, his ability goes beyond the numbers. He takes good care of the puck and plays a solid, physical game. Russell isn’t afraid to battle for the puck, take on his opponent and block shots. Having a player like him in the lineup will surely help the Oilers continue to trend in the right direction.

Edmonton also somewhat needs Russell, due to their blue line situation going into next season. Andrej Sekera faced a leg injury in the Oilers final playoff series against Anaheim. He requires surgery and will be out 6-9 months. With that timetable, the Oilers need another top-four blueliner to fill that void and add security and depth to their defence. Russell can do just that, and is just as strong a name as any other free agent available. In addition, he has proven his worth and knows the team well, and has the experience to thrive.

Russell will surely see an extension in the coming weeks, but it is possible that they will wait until after the expansion draft to set anything in stone.
