In perhaps the league’s largest off-season trade, the Edmonton Oilers traded away star winger Taylor Hall for defenceman Adam Larsson.

With the team’s top scorer gone, the expectations for Larsson were high. Here’s how he lived up to the bar that was set high for day one.

Immediate Impact

When Larsson joined the team, he brought with him a shutdown game and smart defence. The 24-year-old takes exceptional care of the puck and immediately made the Oilers’ blueline stronger. Put on the top pairing alongside Oscar Klefbom, Larsson helped bring a tough, physical and strong style of defence that the team hadn’t seen in years.

In addition to that, Larsson helped the team in one of their weakest areas, and could also move the puck if necessary. With him on the roster, Edmonton reached new heights and even returned to the playoffs. He was additionally a large part of the team’s culture change.

Stats

Through 79 games, Larsson posted four goals and 19 points and was a plus 21. He also managed 253 hits and 160 blocks and helped the Oilers improve all-around on defence. Through a physical and defensively aware style of play, the Swedish blueliner made a huge impact and was an asset at even-strength and on the penalty kill.

One area where he must improve is maintaining possession of the puck. Larsson had 28 takeaways but gave up the puck 71 times this season. On the other hand, though his relative Corsi sat at a -.4, it was the highest of his career. If he continues to play the way he is now, he will grow and leave the negative possession metrics behind him soon after.

Overall Grade: A-

In his first year with a new team, Larsson was effective, adding a physical and shutdown edge to his game to help Edmonton grow stronger in their weakest area. While he must work on limiting turnovers, he has shown his ability to take great care of the puck and knows how to play a safe and smart game.
