From the get-go Friday, the Edmonton Oilers dominated the San Jose Sharks and topped them with a 2-0 win. The playoff series is now knotted 1-1.

First off, the Oilers had an outstanding first period. Not only did they outshoot San Jose 9-6 after 20 minutes, but they outhit them 22-4. Edmonton came out of the gate with plenty of momentum and physicality, and thanks to that, they barely let San Jose put on too much pressure.

Zack Kassian broke the tie in the second period. Working on the penalty kill, he poked the puck away and then got it back to Mark Letestu, who passed it back to Kassian to send him on a breakaway. Kassian had no problem getting the puck past Martin Jones and gave the Oilers the lead.

The Oilers didn’t do a great job of staying out of the box, but remained sharp on the penalty kill, limiting San Jose’s chances and creating scoring opportunities of their own. Edmonton also maintained solid possession of the puck and didn’t allow much to get past them, while they also managed to crash the net and put many shots on goal. The Oilers ended up outshooting San Jose 36-16 by the end of the game.

Star Power

Connor McDavid scored the Oilers second short-handed goal of the night midway through the third period. It marked his first-ever playoff goal and came on a nice hustle that started in the defensive zone. He made it through to the other end of the rink and elected to shoot, putting it five-hole. Cam Talbot also picked up an assist on the goal. Not only did Talbot get a helper, but he managed his first career playoff win and shutout.

Oscar Klefbom, who left the game injured, managed to walk to the room on his own. However, Edmonton is still waiting to give an update on his status moving forward.

Overall, this was a solid game from Edmonton, and the series is now tied up. This is exactly how Game 1 should have gone: pucks on net, tremendous physicality and smart hockey.
