The Edmonton Oilers were trailing at times, but came back and triumphed for an impressive 4-2 win over the San Jose Sharks Thursday.

In a potential first-round matchup, Edmonton found themselves trailing early on. They took poor penalties in the first period and fell behind quickly. However, thanks to the efforts of the top six, Edmonton came back.

Connor McDavid carried his line, and got his 30th goal of the season off a rebound, tying it 1-1 in the second period. McDavid extended his point streak to 12 games, and leads the NHL with 97 points. Brent Burns scored after to make the score 2-1 after 40 minutes.

This is when the Oilers broke out. Milan Lucic led the crusade, and the Oilers made the most of their power-play time. Thanks to his persistence and effort in front of the cage, Lucic scored two power-play goals and another at even strength. His natural hat trick was the third ever three-goal night of his career.

The defence was excellent, limiting the Sharks to just 15 shots on goal and completely shutting them down on four power-play attempts. Edmonton’s penalty kill was perfect, and the team dominated when it came to puck possession.

Oscar Klefbom was by far the Oilers’ top defender. He hustled after the puck, made great defensive plays, won battles through physicality and took plenty of shots. He also ended the night with four assists, three of them primary.

Cam Talbot hung on, stopping 13 shots en route to his 41st victory of the season. With the victory, he broke the Oilers franchise record for most wins in a regular season, topping Grant Fuhr’s 40.

Overall, the team showed grit and heart in one of their final games of the season, and proved that they can stand up to the Sharks if they end up facing them in the playoffs.
