The Edmonton Oilers have been more invested in college hockey players since Peter Chiarelli took over. That may carry over, as they reportedly could have interest in potential NCAA free agent Spencer Foo.
The 23-year-old winger is in his third year with Union College. This season, he has posted 26 goals and 62 points through 38 games. He is a versatile forward who can play the centre or wing, and thankfully for Edmonton, he’s a right-hand shot.

Foo has ties to the Oilers, as he grew up in his hometown of Edmonton. This could draw him toward the team, as could the Oilers’ passion for NCAA players. Edmonton signed Drake Caggiula and Matthew Benning this past year, as well as Condors goaltender Nick Ellis.
In addition to his impressive scoring totals, Foo is also a finalist for the NCAA’s Hobey Baker Award, given to the league’s top collegiate player. With his talent and bright future, the Oilers would be wise to look into him.
Right now, the Oilers have decent depth down the right wing, and in recent games, have found their offensive spark. However, there have been times they have struggled this season.
Additionally, given free agency, and the fact they could be active when it comes to trading in the offseason, Edmonton should invest in right wingers. Foo would be an excellent player to have.
Not only can he score and serve as an asset on special teams, he can contribute, make plays and help ignite the offence. He scores nearly a point per game, and skates well. And while he is on the smaller side, the 6-foot, 185-pound forward can play a solid two-way game and is a plus-39 this year.
In the end, Foo would be well worth the investment, and there could be interest coming from Foo’s camp as well. That is, if he doesn’t stay his senior year.
