Edmonton Oilers winger Anton Slepyshev has found himself on the NHL roster but hasn’t captured his full potential.
The Russian winger has three goals and eight points in 33 games this season and has been fighting to keep a spot in the lineup. With Iiro Pakarinen recently making a return from injury, Slepyshev found himself on the outs. Back in the lineup Tuesday against Dallas, there is plenty for Slepyshev to prove to this team.
Edmonton Oilers
Heavily Involved in the Rush
With the Oilers’ offence failing to convert of late, Slepyshev needs to show that he is ready to make a key impact in the offensive rush. This means that he needs to be on his game, using his speed and offensive awareness to start the rush and help Edmonton score.
The 22-year-old will likely slot in on the fourth line alongside Mark Letestu and Jujhar Khaira, so he will need to do his best to carry that unit.
If Slepyshev makes the most of his limited minutes, making himself noticeable on each shift and carrying the rush, he should have no problem staying in the lineup. For the Oilers, simply exerting effort will make you a better play, and will result in more minutes.
Making the Most of His Ability
One of the unique parts of Slepyshev’s game is his ability with the puck. He is an excellent stick-handler and has great hands. Not to mention, he is able to snipe the puck and has an underrated shot. Additionally, his 6-foot-2, 187-pound frame makes him one of the bigger players, giving him more of an advantage.
The one problem surrounding his play is that he lacks consistency, and doesn’t seem to make the most of his opportunities. However, with Slepyshev chomping at the bit to get into the lineup, it seems as if he will try harder to capitalize on his chances. He also hast to work on his play without the puck and improve on the backcheck.
Overall, there is plenty for him to prove, and it’s about time he’s gotten his opportunity. Edmonton just has to hope that he capitalizes on it.
