Edmonton Oilers: If the Oilers Were ‘Family Guy’ Characters
Hello, Edmonton Oilers fans! We all know that the 2016 campaign didn’t end the way we wanted to, and while there are some teams advancing to the playoffs, we’re looking forward to the draft lottery. We’ll continue with our free agent tracker and player season reviews, but I wanted to do something fun.
We did this back near the Halloween season, when we looked at the Edmonton Oilers roster and decided how it would be if they were Walking Dead characters. It got relatively good feedback, and considering we want to do the best to give the greatest things to our viewers, we decided to have a little fun and go through the roster to see how the team would compare with the cast of Family Guy.
Keep in mind that these are all players from the 2015-16 season, not just ones who are still on the current roster. Also, these players do share all of the exact same qualities as the characters of “Family Guy,” considering how all the characters on the show have multiple flaws and are honestly not that great of people. So without further ado, let’s get started.
Next: Connor McDavid
Connor McDavid is Stewie Griffin
Without all of the evil qualities of course. Stewie is by far everyone’s favorite character on Family Guy and without a doubt the star of the show. Sure, there are some qualities that they don’t have in common, but if you think about it, they’re pretty alike. Both of them are babies of their team, and both of them are geniuses who are loved by everyone.
Stewie can save the world, and McDavid can save the Oilers. Let’s not forget that both of them, while young, do things mainly for the sake of their family. You see throughout “Family Guy” that Stewie grows into a hero of sorts who will go to great lengths for his family. McDavid serves as a hero for Edmonton.
You can’t go and compare McDavid to a Family Guy character without noticing that him and Stewie are very much alike… you know, without the desire to kill mothers and other diabolical plans.
Next: Patrick Maroon
Patrick Maroon is Brian Griffin
Brian is also one of the smartest members of the Griffin family, and ultimately the voice of reason. He’s also not afraid to be aggressive (especially when the mailman comes around) and is the second of the dynamic duo between Stewie and Brian. Since Maroon is a smart player who bounces off McDavid, he is the perfect candidate for Brian.
He’s smart and will do anything to stand up for his teammates. Not only do we love his ability to play, as well as his ability to throw a couple of punches, Maroon has been a much-loved addition to the Oilers roster, just as Brian has become essential to the show.
Maroon, like the talking dog, has been one of Edmonton’s leaders this season and has proven himself to be a calm, collected guy…. until of course someone goes after one of his teammates. He serves as somewhat of a mentor and father figure to others in the locker room, and at times he is underestimated but has a lot of skill, knowledge and ability, just like Brian.
Next: Taylor Hall
is Peter Griffin
Though McDavid is expected to be captain next season, Taylor Hall served as the father figure for this team for the season. Of course, when you look at Peter, there aren’t many redeeming qualities, but the ones he does have match Hall (again, we are NOT saying that Hall is a fat drunken idiot, because he is not).
Both Hall and Peter will do anything for the sake of their family or teammates, and they have deep love for the ones they care about. They will go to great lengths to help the ones they love, fix their mistakes or even win competitions.
In addition, both of them are extremely passionate and aren’t afraid to stand up for what they believe in, even if that means showing their emotions.
Next: Justin Schultz
Justin Schultz is Meg Griffin
If there was a punching bag on the Oilers roster this season, it was in fact Justin Schultz. And obviously Meg is the biggest receiver of hate on “Family Guy.” So, let’s go into discussing this comparison. Both of them have redeeming qualities, despite the fact that they get much too backlash from fans.
Both are pretty smart and have their share of talent, and they also have their potential to be better at their crafts. Sure, Meg is ugly, and Schultz struggles as a defender, but both of them are still young and have all the potential to be great. In addition, both of them serve the role as the part that never really fit in that well, but would be better off elsewhere.
For instance, Schultz didn’t fit in with the Oilers, but when went to Pittsburgh, he proved to be better. He was also great when he played for the Wisconsin Badgers in the NCAA. When Meg isn’t at home with her family being constantly picked on, she is with her friends or succeeding in school (she was said to be one of the best students and have potential as a doctor in different episodes).
That being said, neither of them are well-liked. Poor Meg. Poor Jultz.
Next: Jordan Eberle
is Chris Griffin
Both of these guys are fun-loving, long-tenured characters who possess many talents, even though they aren’t expected to have that potential. No one knew that Chris was an artist, or that he would know a lot about space travel, but he turns out to be quite a smart kid if you look past the poor school performance. Eberle is a young player who loves to have fun and is incredibly skilled, despite being underrated and overlooked by many in the NHL.
His stickhandling ability and play is an art in itself, and Chris has that talent as well. He also serves as a brother to the rest of the team, is extremely nice and ultimately means well, just like Chris does. Chris is also strong and ultimately doesn’t look to hurt anyone, since he is a good-hearted person. So… good-hearted, talented and meaning well describes Jordan Eberle pretty well.
Next: Todd McLellan
Todd McLellan is Lois Griffin
He is someone who loves and cares about his team, just as Lois cares for her children (for some of the series, at least; you’d be surprised what character development and 14 seasons does to Lois).
He is often the voice of reason and has to deal with a lot, including the difficult adversity and the team’s losing record. It’s just like how Lois struggles with the day-to-day mayhem and dysfunction created by her family members.
He is ultimately the leader and is the one to lead problem resolution, just as Lois looks to calm her fellow family members down and is the one who usually ends the arguments or tries to look to solve different problems throughout the family. Through rationality and care, Lois and McLellan have more in common than what would be originally suspected.
Next: Additional Players
Other Mentions
Zack Kassian is Joe Swanson, due to the fact that both are just awesome, kick-ass guys that would do anything to stand up for the ones they love and work incredibly hard to reach their goals and be the best they can be.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins takes the cake as Susie Swanson, the small baby whose intelligence and overall potential is not really seen or heard. Susie’s Patrick Stewart thoughts and Baby Nuge’s ability and quality as a center is often overlooked.
Craig MacTavish would definitely be Adam West, since he had these crazy, abstract ideas that never really worked while he was general manager.
