The Edmonton Oilers may have made this kid’s day, but surely enough, he made theirs. The Oilers signed Kohen Flett, an 8-year-old boy battling a brain tumor, to a contract, making him an honorary player for the day.

Flett has been through 70 rounds of chemotherapy and has been battling cancer since he was 15 months old. He plays for the High Prairie Revolution, and today, his dream came true when he got to suit up for practice with the Edmonton Oilers.

Todd McLellan introduced the young player to the entire team in their dressing room.

“He epitomizes what a perfect Oiler is… he’s tough, he’s got courage, he’s resilient, he inspires others.”

Beautifully spoken, McLellan then led Flett to his stall, seated right next to one of his role models, Connor McDavid, who then gave him a hug and then laughed after mistaking the video for a picture.

He then led the team onto the ice for practice and led the morning stretch, then skated a few times, scored a couple of goals and then got into a scrum with Darnell Nurse (a fight that he had won).

It was Nurse that seemed to grow closest with the youngster; they were together most of the time, and even hung out during his media interview.

“McDavid, Hendricks, Nurse, Eberle,” Flett said the names of his favorite players. “The best time of my life.”

Not only was it his best day,but it was a great day for the players too, who got just as much back as they gave to Flett. It is surely a memory that will last a lifetime.

“It’s awesome,” Nurse said, when asked of what he thought of Flett coming to skate with the team. “We have great opportunities out here to give back to the community, but to a guy who fights and battles like him over here, it’s great to have him out and spend some time.”
