Ryan Jones wears #28. I wondered aloud yesterday what number Mark Fistric would wear when he joined the Oilers.

Maybe he’d switch up 28 and make it 82. Today, we wonder no longer, it’s #45. He probably took that from a famous Oiler, right?

Toby Peterson is probably the most recognizable name out of that trio, what, when Coach MacT had him a line with Sykora and Lupul some years back. Shawn Belle had it for about a dozen games in 2011, and Ales Pisa sported #45 for a total of 48 games a decade ago.

A few transactions took place today, one involving the Oilers.

TRADES

Edmonton acquires Mark Fistric from the Dallas Stars for a third round pick. While certainly no ‘wow’ move, getting an NHL defenceman into Edmonton before the season started was an action that absolutely needed to be made. With Theo Peckham out with a hip flexor and Andy Sutton likely out for the year, the Oilers acquired a third pairing defenceman who’s capable of blocking some shots. Good.
Montreal traded defenceman Brendan Nash to Florida for defenceman Jason DeSantis.

SIGNINGS

Vancouver signed unrestricted free agent (and former Oiler) Jim Vandermeer to a one year contract valued at 600K. Vandermeer spent 2011-12 in the San Jose Sharks organization after a year with the Oilers. This marks the second consecutive day that the Canucks have signed former Oilers (I don’t know how you could’ve missed the Canucks signing Cam Barker). Tomorrow, the Canucks plan on acquiring Bob Beers, so stay tuned.

The Oilers announced via Twitter and official website that Rexall Place’s lower bowl will be opened so that fans can enjoy the second and third days of training camp. They’ll also have more concession stands open so that fans won’t have to wait seven hours to get their complimentary popcorn and soda, which is a good-faith gesture. Boulders are moving here. First Peckham has a hip flexor and the team acquires a body for the defence. Then, the lower bowl is opening and more concession stands are open.
