Yamamoto by the Numbers

The Spokane Chiefs winger had an outstanding 2016-17 campaign, finishing sixth in scoring among all WHL skaters. In 65 games with the Chiefs, Yamamoto scored 42 goals and 99 points and was a plus-14. Not to mention, the Washington native was also named the Chiefs player of the year and made the WHL Western Conference Second All-Star Team.

In 2015-16, the WHL named Yamamoto the most Sportsmanlike Player, and he also played for the U.S. National U18 team. He racked up seven goals and 13 points through seven games with Team USA.

On-Ice Ability

Perhaps Yamamoto’s best quality is his speed. He is an outstanding skater and can keep up with the play, while also taking the puck and running with it. Yamamoto also knows how to make quick plays on the fly. Not only is he a solid passer and an outstanding playmaker with great vision and on-ice intelligence, but he has an outstanding shot and has tremendous scoring capability.

The elephant in the room is his size. Many are concerned that the 5-foot-8, 160-pound winger does not have the ideal frame for the NHL. However, at only 18, he still has time to grow and put on more weight. Not to mention, it has not stopped him from scoring; in fact, his speed and size allow him to find multiple scoring areas and get pucks in tight, while also helping him squeeze past defence and get to the greasy areas. In addition, scouts mention his ability to push players off the puck, and his frame doesn’t limit his physical ability.

What He’ll Do For Edmonton

Overall, Yamamoto is a creative, smart and unique forward who will bring a lot to the Oilers’ organization, and in years’ time, he could be an outstanding addition to Edmonton’s young roster.
