It looks like Edmonton Oilers veteran Matt Hendricks will not returning to the team next season.

The 35-year-old veteran told Sportsnet Thursday that he is “99 percent sure” that he will not be back for the 2017-18 campaign.

“…With the young guys and the experience [the Oilers] have to gain, it’ll be hard for me to get into the lineup,” Hendricks said in the Sportsnet phone interview. “It’s hard to have a fourth-line guy who is good in the room and stuff if I’m going to be sat out every night. I totally understand it, but it’s not going to work for either side. If this team’s going to be good, they need to get their young guys experience. I get it.”

Hendricks struggled with injury this past season and only suited up for 42 games. He scored just four goals and seven points but was outstanding for the Oilers in other areas. Hendricks won 56.9 percent of his faceoffs and also racked up 79 hits. As one of the tougher, more physical forwards, Hendricks made the most of his time on the ice.

As one of the tougher, more physical forwards, Hendricks made the most of his time on the ice. However, his strongest impact will be what he did for the team off the ice. One of the team’s most lovable players, Hendricks was a positive presence, who stayed with the team through thick and thin.

Over time, he has not only witnessed the front office and roster changes but has been an integral part of changing the culture. By teaching and leading by example, while always sticking up his teammates and keeping a smile on his face, Hendricks has been an outstanding member of the team.
