Edmonton Oilers Odds and Ends 6

—The Oilers are heading into training camp with the roster you see now. Jonathan Willis reported that the team plans to ride it out with the roster it has. Oilers GM Craig MacTavish also admitted that Leon Draisaitl is not a lock for the line up. While the organization is sweet on the German phenom, they know he’s only 18 and may not have the hockey sense yet to survive a debut in the Pacific Division. Sean Monahan did last year, but there are no guarantees he has a strong start like that youngster.

—Drew Remenda is now part of the Sportsnet broadcasts for Oilers games. Read Oil On Whyte staff writer Kurt Leavins’ piece on Remenda—Kurt has a unique perspective on his hiring, so give it a read. Loving Kurt’s blogs, readers!

—The arena in Edmonton is spurring all kinds of adjacent development. The announcement of the new Stantec tower, which will become the city’s tallest building, is viewed as a big feather in the cap of Daryl Katz and his arena group. While its one thing to have a skyscraper or two go up from a couple oil companies, it remains to be seen whether or not it creates the development the downtown core needs. Edmonton’s city centre still remains a void after six PM. Until the downtown core has a late night pulse, I call the development a mirage. Once there are a few more hotels , a few more high rise residences, and a gaggle of cool bars, restaurants and shops, the arena is simply a construction project and not much more. I look forward to it, but Edmonton coming to life from it is not a certainty.

—He’s a man, not a child. Anyone else tired of people talking about Nugent-Hopkins like he is a six year old? Baby Nuge, L’il Nuge—that kind of thing. Let’s cut it out. He is meant to be our top center and we should be building him up with some tough love and lots of fan attention, not a bunch of mildly insulting nicknames.

—Hey! An Eastern CFL team won this week….against another Eastern team. Lol!

—As we get closer to training camp, look for lots more from Oil on Whyte. We are getting close and you can look forward to more content, more polls, and more posts from us here. And as always, we need more bloggers. Get off the comment boards and post here!
