Edmonton Oilers: Odds and Ends 2

So, here we are again, in the doldrums (is there a doldrum in the summer, i don’t know) of summer and all of us who love hockey are chomping at the bit for SOMETHING to happen.

Sooooo…here’s to another edition of Odds and Ends!

Waive Goodbye

Who will we say goodbye to on the waiver wire this September? Jesse Joensuu for sure. Unless the hulking Finn can up his offensive game, he will find himself in the same situation he did with the New York Islanders. What situation is that? That would be showing glimmers in camp only to fizzle in a real life scenario. What really doesn’t help him is being cast off by two lottery teams in a row. Is anyone else waiver fodder? Perhaps a couple of OKC men low on the totem pole, or Luke Gazdic if he blows a tire this year.

Nursing A Wound

Darnell Nurse can’t get any love. Everyone from TSN to the most grammatically challenged message board weasel think he needs one more year of development. He is chomping at the bit to make the leap. Will he? Mmm, maybe. There is room for ONE guy on the back end outside of the current veteran crew. It’s down to Martin Marincin, Oscar Klefbom and Nurse. Admittedly, reports have been emerging that he has a couple of things to work on, but can Klefbom push aside both him and Marincin? Marincin has the benefit of a season with Eakins (part of one, anyway) and that might secure his spot. We shall see.

Heritage or Winter Classic?

Edmonton and Calgary were once again passed over for the Heritage/Winter Classic series, otherwise known as the “NHL stealing a great idea” event. Of course, Edmonton hosted the first one back in 2003. Wouldn’t it have been great to commemorate the event with a 10th anniversary game? Yes, it would have been. Invite the Flyers or Islanders if they want a rival with a team owning a better TV ratings base. Or, do the obvious and get Calgary up here. All i know it’s high time the coldest city in the NHL gets another one of these events. There ought to be one in Canada every year.

Tune in tomorrow for my blog on how Oil Change being cancelled will do the team wonders.
