Edmonton Oilers: Odds and Ends

It’s the summer break. Hockey is a ways away yet, and things get awful quiet come July. So, for this edition, here are my varied odds and ends; things the Oilers need to address, line ups. etc. Here we go:

—Jason Williams. Here is a guy that the club has signed in OKC. He’s a Gagner sized center and is a move to bring a veteran presence in the line up. Mark Arcobello and Anton Lander will probably spends good chunks of the season with the big club. As an AHL player he has 215 points in 249 games. While his recent pro play has tailed off, he has a better chance of finding his touch again on a club like the Barons, He’s 34.

—Nail Yakupov spoke to the media today. Of note was his announcement he is officially wearing #10 on the ice this season. Of course, former captain Shawn Horcoff wore those numbers previously. But, this is no nod to the Coff. Indeed, it is the number Pavel Bure wore. Bure is yakupov’s idol, and bearing his number will mean Yak will have to bring it for 14-15. He’s already back in town training, and word has it he has put on more muscle. He wants to be better, and is working hard. That can only mean up arrows for the first overall pick.

–The arena project in Edmonton is spurring quite a bit of adjacent development, making the Katz group look pretty savvy. They are delivering on all their promises thus far. It will be pretty amazing that the Oilers will call the most advanced arena in the NHL home once it opens. The downtown core needed a centrepiece, and the Oilers are the catalyst. Like it or not, the arena will spur downtown to life. Just expect your rent down there to get ridiculous.

—A blogger at Oilogosohere proposed the Oilers convince the Oil Kings to trade for Leon Draisaitl should he be sent back down. It’s not a bad idea. But, if he guts the Oil Kings just for some advantages developmentally in the short term, it should be avoided. But, it would be pretty neat.
