It did not take long for the Edmonton Oilers media to get a taste of new come Ilya Bryzgalov when he spoke upon his arrival with his new club. The Russian netminder who became ever so famous after appearing on HBO’s 24/7 series comes just as advertised and the main stream folks got a first hand look.
Courtesy of Sportsnet, the dialogue with Bryzgalov and the reporters is captured below. Yes fans, the Oilers interviews are about to become much more colorful.
Reporter “Do you see this as a second chance for you?”
Bryzgalov “What do you mean?”
Reporter “Just, the way things ended up in Philadelphia…”
Bryzgalov “I never lost my first chance, you know.”
Straight, blunt and to the point. Did we honestly expect anything less? If you answered yes, you’re kidding yourself.
But it shouldn’t matter what Bryzgalov says to the media as long as he performs well for the Oilers. Considered to be on a 60-game tryout to try and earn himself a long-term deal next summer, Bryzgalov could be the push that Devan Dubnyk needs to continue to play a strong game in goal and give the Oilers a chance to win.
So while Oilers fan wait for their first glimpse at what Bryzgalov will do on the ice, we are left with his entertaining remarks off the ice to get us by. Is it a distraction for the club? Or maybe this is what the team needs at this moment, something to distract them from the fact they are once again one of the worst teams in the league.
Either way, let’s hope Bryzgalov comes just as advertised on the ice, referring to the netminder who was rock solid in Phoenix for the Coyotes prior to joining the Philadelphia Flyers.
