Oilers Trade Smid To Calgary

Jason O. Watson-US PRESSWIRE

The Oilers have traded Ladislav Smid and Oliver Roy to the Calgary Flames for goaltending prospect Laurent Brossoit and Roman Horak.  This is an obvious salary dump for the Oilers; Smid’s cap hit is 3.5 million for 4 years.

This trade by itself makes little sense from an Oilers perspective.  The Oilers trading one of their few physical defence for a couple of prospects.

Darren Dreger of TSN is reporting that the Oilers may be close to signing Ilya Bryzgalov but the Oilers had enough cap space to make that deal without dumping Smid’s salary

There is more to come…  Stay tuned.

Update Bryzgalov has been signed by the Edmonton Oilers

Goal is the Oilers most glaring weakness, and they had to address it first. This is probably the best move that MacT had available given that the entire NHL knew that they really really needed an NHL goalie. It’s only one year, so limited damage even if Bryz is as much of a space cadet as he’s portrayed to be by the media.

I wouldn’t say it’s a good move, but rather the only move that under the circumstances. I really hope they don’t do anything stupid like trading Eberle. If it’s Philly, then the ONLY player on their roster that would be worth considering would be Giroux.

Will be sad to see Smid go. He’s been arguably the Oilers best shut stay at home D for the past few seasons, but has had a rough patch lately (but so has the entire team!). Now the Oilers have 0 DMen that can stand up for their small forwards…
