According to Darren Dreger of TSN, the Edmonton Oilers will welcome back Sam Gagner to their lineup tonight when they host the Toronto Maple Leafs at Rexall Place.
Talk about a welcomed addition for the Oilers who have been without Gagner’s service since the middle of training camp when he was the victim of a careless stick swinging accident that led to a broken jaw. The original timeline was early November for Gagner’s return, at best. Having him suit up tonight given it’s still October has to be considered ahead of schedule, especially when you consider that he was tabled for another week of recover just three days ago.
The 24-year old who signed a new 3-year deal this summer to keep in an Oilers uniform is coming off one of his most productive seasons despite the year being a lockout shortened schedule. Last season in 48-games Gagner put up 38 points, 14 of which were goals.
The slick puck moving centre will help bolster an Oilers power play that has looked lost at times lately, hopefully bringing some much needed stability with the man advantage.
The big question surrounding the Oilers roster is what do they now do with the abundance of players they have? Anton Lander could be sent down to OKC or the club could look at moving one of their several defenseman that they are currently carrying. Mark Arcobello is also going to be a name we’ll hear a lot about today with his roster spot in suspect.
Either way, it’s great to see the Oilers getting healthy so we can get a good look at what this team can truly accomplish when they have their full squad together.
