According to the Edmonton Oilers official Twitter feed, the team has assigned Anton Lander to the Oklahoma City Barons of the AHL.
The move isn’t surprising given the news that broke early this morning when it was learnt that Sam Gagner was medically cleared to return to the Oilers lineup.
Activating Gagner from from the injured-reserve list put the Oilers at one too many players on their active roster and subsequently led to Lander’s demotion. There was some speculation that the Oilers may make a move with one of their defenseman, namely Denis Grebeshkov or Corey Potter, who was recently recalled from the Barons. In the end it was Lander who goes down.
The 22-year old was held pointless in his only game with the big club so far this year that saw him suit up against the Los Angeles Kings last Sunday. He did skate to over fourteen minutes of ice-time in a game that saw the Oilers largely outplayed and outshot. Richard Bachman, another recent callup stole the show despite losing the game in a shootout and his performance has certainly bought him more time with the Oilers, another reason why Lander is being sent back down.
Just last week it was announced that Lander had been named as the captain of the Barons.
