The Edmonton Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins announced Tuesday morning that the team had made a series of roster moves prior to the team’s meeting with the might Pittsburgh Penguins.
Courtesy of the Oilers official Twitter account, confirmed that Nail Yakupov will return to the lineup tonight after being a healthy scratch for the past two games. The coach decided to sit Yakupov for two straight contests after he felt that the young Russian was struggling to find his game. Yakupov was described as being “lost” on the ice by his coach prior to the healthy scratch and it’s become public knowledge that the sniper is frustrated by the move. Look for Yakupov to prove something tonight.
The team also announced that Ryan Jones has been recalled from the Oklahoma City Barons and will suit up for tonight’s game.
Jones was a victim of the numbers game when training camp concluded and was placed on waivers much to the dismay of many Oilers’ fans. It’s not concrete at this time, but speculation is that Mike Brown will sit tonight and allow Jones to rejoin the Oilers. Like Yakupov, watch for Jones to play a ‘statement’ type of game tonight that would bolster his chances of staying with the big club. Nothing like having a couple of players with a burr in their bonnet to possibly spark the team.
The Oilers also announced that forward Jesse Joensuu will not play tonight and will return to Edmonton to nurse an injury believed to be related to his back. The gritty forward has missed more time than he’s played this year thanks to a nagging back injury. When the injury is confirmed we’ll provide you with the details.
Finally, defenseman Philip Larsen has been sent down to the OKC Barons after being recalled last week. Larsen did not see any game action during this stint with the big club, making him the second blue liner to be recalled and only see practice time this season. Brandon Davidson was the other.
