Dobber’s Point Projection: 44

Oil on Whyte Ruling: Over

Like the goal projection, Schultz could surpass the point total, meaning a run at 50 points isn’t out of the equation.  No one ever said the Oilers wouldn’t score a lot of goals. In fact everyone knows that their Achilles heal is going to be keeping the puck out of their own net.

Schultz had a minus-17 rating last season meaning he’s more about the offense on the blue line than he is the defense.  Other defenseman on the team will specialize on shutting down the opposing team’s top lines but for Schultz, his greatest value is when he’s getting his name on the score sheet.

With his game being more about the offense and the aforementioned points about the power play and his ability to join the offensive attack, this blue liner could creep into the Norris Trophy discussions if he can post more than 44 points.

Everyone knows that a large contract is coming Justin Schultz but the Oilers would be wise to wait this year to ensure he earns it. With a spot on Team Canada’s Olympic roster still a possibility, look for Schultz to make his case on why he should be considered for Sochi.

All motivating factors and in the end, the biggest one for Schultz will be to help this Oilers team win.  The best way for him to do that is to simply play his game and stay healthy.  If he can accomplish both of those then taking the over and going with 47 points isn’t that far of a stretch.
