#3 – Who will make the cut on defense?
The Oilers defense corps is still missing that legitimate number one or two blue liner but what they don’t lack is a shortage of NHL ready defenseman. In reality, as many as ten defenseman could be perceived as ready to play in the bigs and while this includes Nick and Justin Schultz, Andrew Ference, Corey Potter, Jeff Petry and Ladislav Smid, there are some new comers to the scene ready to battle for a roster spot.
Dennis Grebeshkov is back for his second tour of duty with the Oilers and will likely be given a spot in the top seven defense. Anton Belov was signed this past spring and many believe he is ready to contribute at the NHL level. Oscar Klefbom is the Oilers top prospect on the blue line and it may be his time to break through, crack the roster and begin his big league career.
Philip Larsen is also a potential blue liner for the Oilers but he would have to be considered a long shot at this point.
There it is. Ten defenseman that will all compete for seven regular spots in Edmonton. Answers will be provided through the exhibition games and the compete level will be at an all time high.
