It is another case of the Monday’s but at least there was hockey on over the weekend to help soften the blow as we embark on another work week.
For the Oilers and their young prospects, it’s been all work for the past few weeks and finally this past weekend they were able to show the management that drafted them why they deserve a chance to compete at training camp.
The annual Young Stars Tournament was held in Penticton, BC and it featured the baby Canucks, Flames and Jets as competition for the young Oilers.
The young Oilers’ hopefuls dropped all three of their decisions, outscored in the three games by a combined 16-5 deficit. Is this cause for concern? No, not at all. It’s a handful of games in early September that don’t mean a thing except for the opportunity to evaluate the recent draft picks and prospects for the organization.
Sure they trailed the Jets rookie’s 6-0 at one point and they gave up a 2-0 lead Sunday against the Canucks. But not to worry Oilers fans, these kids are just that and aside from Oscar Klefbom, there is very little chance we’ll be seeing any other of these players in an Oilers uniform for at least another year or two.
If you’re a fan of the rough and tumble then this tournament was for you as the games featured multiple fights accompanied by plenty of pushing and shoving. The rookies are trying to show they belong and playing tough and gritty will only help their chances.
Early reports have Marc-Olivier Roy, Darnell Nurse, Kyle Platzer, Jujhar Khaira and of course Klefbom as the names that impressed. Of course who doesn’t enjoy the story of Brandon Davidson and how he over came the battle of cancer to continue his hockey career.
As we say good-bye to another Young Stars tournament there are headlines abound for the Oilers. You could get hung up on the fact that Edmonton didn’t show well in the three games, getting wildly outscored. Or you could focus on the positives and look forward to the future as these kids grow.
