Last month here at Oil on Whyte we discussed whether or not the Edmonton Oilers needed to freshen up their look with some new designed jerseys. This was on the coat tails of the San Jose Sharks unveiling their slightly modified but deemed “new” jerseys and most fans and readers felt that the current uniforms that the Oilers wear are just fine.
Staying on the jersey train and slightly changing focus, the Buffalo Sabres had their new third jersey leaked yesterday. The verdict on the new threads? It’s been an outcry from Sabres’ and other hockey fans over the hideous design and color scheme. In short, the fans “slammed” the Sabres over the new jerseys.
And rightfully so. Two tones of yellow followed by what looks like a blue cape along the back has left the Sabres the laughing stock of the league at the moment. The sad part is they haven’t started playing any games yet and already everyone is making them the butt of their jokes.
The Sabres are expected to be one of the basement dwellers in the Eastern Conference this season and long time franchise icons Ryan Miller and Thomas Vanek could be traded. After seeing the new sweaters that they’ll be forced to wear every so often, it wouldn’t be surprising to hear that both, if not all the players in Buffalo wanted out (high levels of sarcasm there for those that didn’t catch on).
It’s understandable as to why the Sabres felt the urge to come up with a new alternate jersey. Marketing ploys like this are used to help bridge the gap from what could be a train wreck of a season to keeping their fans moderately satisfied with new merchandise. At this rate, the fans don’t have much to look forward to including the upcoming release of the team’s third jersey. Rather it’ll be a long and torturous winter in Buffalo unless management can find a way to restore the faith from their fans by miraculously putting a winning team on the ice.
As for the jerseys? There is nothing miraculous about them and should be pulled off the shelves before the merchandise stores open.
There have been some horrific third jerseys over the years from across the league and this one certainly deserves it’s share of criticism. Or maybe you’re a fan of the Sabres new look. Take part in our poll and let’s see what the readers think about Buffalo’s new alternate jersey.
