Darnell Nurse: Can He Make Season Opener?

One question that I have been focused on since Edmonton drafted Darnell Nurse 7th

Overall, is that “Is he NHL ready?” I’ve heard he was great at development camp. Depending on what you read and what you believe, the opinions vary. I really admire Nurse’ style of game, it’s what Edmonton will need to compete in the playoffs. He’s rugged, he moves well and he has leadership qualities. That’s what Edmonton needs. Darnell could add a bit more muscle to his frame, other than that, there’s a chance he could make it. He’s a very a steady two-way defenseman, and with proper development, he could play regularly. There’s only one problem. The Oilers have J. Schultz, N. Schultz, Ference, Smid, Petry, Belov and Corey Potter. Add Klefbom to the mix, depends on your opinion. That’s eight defenseman alone without Nurse. If Darnell Nurse out peforms Belov and Klefbom come training camp, he could very well get the chance to impress in his first 9 NHL games. I will be watching Darnell Nurse’ progress over the next year or so and will give my opinion. Anyway, have a great week folks.

Nope, at least 1 more year.

  • Russ

2-3yrs, didn’t impress me at the development camp and Klefbom was clearly the superior of the 2.

I agree with Russ and BillHK. No need to rush this kid. Let him play one more year of Junior, spend next year in the OKC and let him develop into the player the Oilers need in 2-3 years.
