This is the goaltender the Oilers need to be focusing on when July 5th rolls around, providing the Boston Bruins don’t sign him to a long-term deal. A young netminder who has shown plenty of promise between the pipes that could not only challenge Devan Dubnyk for the starting role, but claim it and hold on to it long-term.
Last season in Boston he was used somewhat sparingly with up and coming star Tuukka Rask taking much of the workload. Khudobin still managed to put up impressive numbers, proving he is on the verge of breaking through as a legitimate number one goalie in the NHL.
Dubnyk hasn’t been guaranteed the number one job in Edmonton and signing Khudobin could bring out the best in both netminders as they compete for consistent playing time. Having Khudobin on-board to help push Dubnyk could serve to be a ploy that the Oilers need to confirm whether or not Dubnyk is the real deal.
Khudobin will be a popular free-agent if he gets that far this Friday with many clubs surely to be looking to add a young, talented netminder. While he won’t break the bank, he won’t come cheap either.
