Andrew Ference

2013 Club : Boston Bruins

2013 Salary : $3,400,000

Height: 5’11″

Weight : 189 lbs

Age: 34

Stats: 48 GP, 4 G, 9 A, 13 PTS, +9, 19:29 TOI

A wily veteran, Ference brings an edge to the blue line as a hard nosed, tough player to play against.  Oilers fans will remember him best from his days with the Calgary Flames where he would rough up Edmonton’s smaller forwards to the point where it made going in the corners for the puck an unpleasant task.  That is the kind of blue liner the Oilers need to surround the likes of Justin Schultz with.

Ference has already been told that he won’t return to the Bruins next season after six and a half solid seasons that included a Stanley Cup Championship. He typically averaged just under twenty minutes of ice-time to go with modestly average offensive numbers, typically in that 15 points per season range.

But again, he would not be counted upon to quarterback the Oilers power play if Edmonton was to sign him.  Rather it’d be his aggressive defensive game that would make Oilers’ fans forget about the ravaging hits he laid upon our forwards during his tenure with the Flames.  And to top it off, it’d be a homecoming of sorts for the Edmonton native.

He is 34-years of age and has missed time over the year’s due to injury, albeit nothing major for the last three seasons making this a reasonable option for MacTavish.

Oil on Whyte projected salary: 3-years, $8.25 million
