The highest paid defenseman that is available on the market this summer is Ron Hainsey of the Winnipeg Jets. While he may not put up the numbers of a top-four d-man, Hainsey played big minutes in Winnipeg last season and was a vital piece of their blue line that almost led them to the playoffs.
The 32-year old has played for four different teams during his ten year career in the NHL and could be in line for a nice raise this summer given the amount of teams that are short on quality defenseman.
With his best offensive years arguably behind him, Hainsey could slide into the number four or five spot with the Oilers, helping to alleviate the big minutes that could be thrown at one of the other Edmonton defenseman.
During his playing days with the Columbus Blue Jackets and now defunct Atlanta Thrashers, Hainsey put together three straight seasons with 30 or more points. Given he hasn’t scored a goal in the last two seasons, Hainsey would be brought to Edmonton for reasons other than to rekindle his offensive prowess.
While he wouldn’t be your prototypical top-four defenseman, Hainsey would bring value in the areas mentioned – defensive strengths, chew precious minutes to allow others to rest without being a liability.
Adding Hainsey would be nice but in the end I think he’s going to be too expensive for the attributes that he brings.
