With the NHL Entry Draft in the rear view mirror and plenty of work still needed to be done to the Edmonton Oilers roster, the focus shifts to free-agency. Not only is it a period that provides optimism and excitement that your team could sign a headlining star that will turn the fortunes of your hockey club around, it also brings direction as to which way your team is heading as training camps begin to emerge on the horizon.
Last time we looked at the top free agent forwards that the Edmonton Oilers need to consider and now it’s time to examine the defenseman. It’s no secret that the Oilers need to get stronger on the back end and with news that the club is the front runner to sign Paul Ranger, there are still a few other options if Craig MacTavish decides to dip into the free-agent pool to bolster his blue line.
The defensive free-agent pool is a more difficult to sift through. There are a lot of veteran blue liners but their age and value are concerning and the lack of a true, top four defenseman is evidently missing. With that being said, here are the top defenseman that the Oilers should consider, should they look at picking up an extra d-man or two.
