Yesterday we learnt that the Calgary Flames had acquired forward Corban Knight from the Florida Panthers in exchange for a modest fourth-round draft pick. If Knight can reach his potential ceiling than giving up a mid-round pick will look like a steal for the Flames as they attempt to re-tool their roster.
News also broke yesterday that Knight had chosen the Flames over the Oilers. Given he was set to be a free-agent and Florida wasn’t going to re-sign him, Knight had some control in where his rights were traded. If he didn’t like the destination then he could not sign and still hit the open market on July 5th.
But the Flames convinced him to come to Calgary and wear enemy colors to start his career in the NHL. Bob McKenzie of TSN said it was down to either Edmonton or the Flames and Bob Stauffer later tweeted that Knight has family ties to Calgary, making the decision easier on him.
That doesn’t change the fact that the Oilers were snubbed in favor of their provincial rivals. Another chapter in the battle of Alberta that leaves the Oilers searching for more depth up the middle. Not saying that Knight was the answer but he would have been a solid addition at center for an otherwise weak position for the copper and blue.
Let’s get your reaction to the Knight trade that the Flames have so called ‘won.’ How do you feel the morning after the deal happened and the Oilers were snubbed by this kid? Take part in our poll and let us know your reaction.
