Last night during the Sportsnet broadcast of the Oilers vs the Red Wings, the panel discussed the possibility of the San Jose Sharks trading Ryan Clowe. Nick Kypreos had the Oilers in on Clowe. Why not? Clowe is a winger with size (6’2 – 225lbs) and skill; two things the Oilers (or at least us fans) covet. The big newfie becomes a UFA at season’s end and will be on the radar of a few teams going in to the offseason.
The big question mark for me is will Clowe re-sign here in the offseason? If you can get some guarantee that will happen then sure, go ahead and trade for him. If there is no confirmation that he will sign with the Oil long term, then don’t trade any assets and just wait until free agent day to make an offer.
Clowe can play top six minutes, fights, hits, and puts pucks in the back of the net. The UFA probably lowers his trade value as well, and a prospect or 2nd round pick is all I’d be willing to pay for the guy.
This trade deadline should, I would hope be a busy one for Oilers management, there are a lot of changes to be made to this young team before they can be perennially successful.
