The NHL made an offer to the NHLPA last week. Both sides will meet in New York in about an hour to see if they can make it work. It’d be nice to usher in 2013 with the prospect of seeing real NHL hockey by the end of the month.
It’s looking a little more like the owners want to end this.
Remember ‘the hill we (NHL) will die on’? Remember how stubborn Bill Daly looked in that conference where he said that the owners were committed to keeping contracts to a 5 year max? Somebody must’ve died on a hill recently. They moved it to six years. They’re even offering some more contract flexibility, changing the hard line stance from a mere 5% variance during a contract’s term.
As is tradition in these negotiations, I don’t expect the NHLPA to walk in and give this the thumbs up. Hopefully the PA is at least tolerant of this deal, and with a little moving and shaking, a deal can be had this week.
We’re at the eleventh hour. More like the fifty-eighth minute of the eleventh hour.
