The Oilers Will Be Well Represented at the 2013 World Junior Hockey Championship

Five Oilers’ draft picks will be participating in the upcoming World Junior Hockey Championship (Dec. 26th-Jan. 5th). The group is headlined by current Oiler Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (Canada) and the 2012 number one overall pick Nail Yakupov (Russia). Two other Oilers’ prospects would have been playing if not for injuries: Oscar Klefbom (Sweden) and Martin Gernat (Slovakia).

Surpisingly, Danil Zharkov will join Yakupov on the Russian Squad. The Belleville Bull has suffered through a miserable start to his OHL season and wasn’t expected by many to make the team. And it was uncertain whether or not Tobias Rieder would be able to play for the German team because of a recent injury However, he is listed on the German roster here. Finally, David Musil, to no one’s surprise, will be manning the blueline for the Czech Republic.

And speaking of the WJHC, Jordan Eberle was named by TSN as the number one player in Team Canada history at the World Juniors. A former Oiler was deemed to be the third best ever. Some guy named Wayne Gretzky.

You also caught my mistake. I’m correcting it now.

It was much simpler when it was Czechoslovakia.
